Prof. Dr. Arın Namal (Istanbul, Türkiye)
I have been an academic at the Department of History of Medicine and Ethics at Istanbul University, Istanbul Faculty of Medicine, for thirty years. During half of this long period of service, I had the privilege of maintaining close and continuous contact with our dear colleague, the late Prof. Dr. Bożena Płonka-Syroka.
Together, we worked to establish common scientific platforms between Poland and Türkiye in our field. We organized symposia in both Poland and Türkiye, bringing together scholars from both countries. These symposia were subsequently published as books. New professional connections, friendships, and lasting bonds were formed between Polish and Turkish scholars.
It was our esteemed colleague, Prof. Dr. Płonka-Syroka, who created and sustained this remarkable dynamism. She approached other cultures with an open-minded curiosity, free from prejudice, and placed great value on bringing people from different cultural backgrounds closer together. She did so with her exceptionally warm heart, genuine friendship, and deep belief in the power of human connection.
Prof. Dr. Płonka-Syroka was highly respected and deeply loved within Turkish academic circles.
Today, as an expression of our gratitude for the bridge of friendship she built between Turkish and Polish scholars in our country, we are taking the initiative to prepare a commemorative volume in her memory.
My dear colleague and friend, Prof. Dr. Płonka-Syroka, we lost you far too soon. May you rest in peace.
You devoted yourself to the field of science to which you belonged, working with passion and dedication. You created platforms for young scholars to develop, present their research, and publish their work. You also established book series as an editor, providing lasting opportunities for new generations of researchers to contribute to our field.
Through all your efforts, your scholarly achievements, the opportunities you created for younger generations, and the place you hold in our hearts, you will remain immortal.
I extend my deepest condolences to her family, to her colleagues at the University of Wrocław, and to all her colleagues and friends throughout Poland.
May her memory live on with love, respect, and profound gratitude.

I was deeply saddened to learn Prof. Dr. Bożena Płonka-Syroka. Please accept my heartfelt condolences to you and your family for this profound loss.
I believe that the passing of Professor Bożena is a great loss not only to her family and loved ones, but also to the academic community and to all of us who had the privilege of knowing her.
During the International Congress on Epidemic Diseases in Their Historical, Legal, Ethical and Media Dimensions, chaired by Professor Bożena’s longtime friend Prof. Dr. F. Arın Namal of Istanbul University, and for which I served as Chair of the Organizing Committee, Professor Bożena supported us with great dedication and made invaluable contributions at every stage of the preparation and organization of the congress. Her visit to Diyarbakır to participate in the congress and the time we had the opportunity to spend together will always remain among my most cherished memories.
Alongside her distinguished academic personality, Professor Bożena possessed a deeply compassionate and generous nature. She cared sincerely for others and was profoundly sensitive to their suffering. One unforgettable example of this was when she contacted us shortly after the February 6 earthquakes that struck Türkiye and deeply affected Diyarbakır as well. She wanted to learn about the situation of our medical students who had been affected by the earthquakes and expressed her wish to provide them with financial assistance and scholarships. The fact that, from hundreds of kilometres away, she shared our grief as though it were her own, showed such concern for our students in their time of hardship, and wished to help them without expecting anything in return touched us deeply.
This gesture once again showed us that Professor Bożena deserves to be remembered not only for her scholarly achievements, but also as an exceptional person distinguished by her humanity, compassion, and profound sense of solidarity. I will always consider it an honour to have known her and to have had the opportunity to work with her.
We will always cherish Professor Bożena’s memory with affection and respect here in Diyarbakır and at our university. I firmly believe that, alongside the academic legacy she leaves behind, the kindness she showed and the lasting impression she made on the lives of those she touched will continue to live on.
At this time of profound loss, I share your grief from the bottom of my heart and wish you, your family, her loved ones, and all those who knew her strength and comfort.
I am also sharing a few photographs from the Congress, where we had the privilege of creating some wonderful memories together.
I remember Professor Bożena with profound respect and gratitude.
With my deepest sympathy and heartfelt condolences,

Do Szanownej Pani Profesor Bożeny Płonki-Syroki
Moja Droga Pani Profesor,
Dzięki Pani cennemu wkładowi tureccy i polscy naukowcy połączyli siły i stworzyli synergię.

Dear Polish colleagues,
It is with great sadness that I received the news of the great loss that has affected us all – the entire scientific community. The deceased was not only a valued scientific colleague to me, but also a long-time friend.
Since the 1980s, even before the political upheavals in Europe, we have collaborated and met at conferences in Poland, the Baltic states, and the former GDR.
These close contacts continued into the modern era, particularly when Professor Bożena Płonka-Syroka participated in our academic conferences organized by the "European Scientific Relations" project commission of the Academy of Public Sciences in Erfurt, which took place in Erfurt, Vienna, and Padua. A particularly positive outcome of this project was the meeting between Professor Bożena Płonka-Syroka and Professor Arin Namal from Istanbul, who then launched a joint, highly successful Polish-Turkish project on the history of balneology.
Bożena Płonka-Syroka's
Her lectures and discussion contributions, which were also given in German, were always an enrichment and a valuable contribution to all of our conferences and meetings. Her likely last publication appeared in Volume 23 of our "European Scientific Relations" series, the memorial volume for Prof. Dietrich von Engelhardt.
We will greatly miss our Polish colleague Bożena Płonka-Syroka and will cherish her memory.
